Hertz upgrades

Mentioned this in my Element review, but felt this deserves another post. It’s important to ask for upgrades at the counter. Maybe you can get a free one because of status – or maybe you can negotiate a cheap upgrade because they have a glut of cars. My usual negotiated rate for a “full size”, whatever that means, is between $40 and $60 per day, excluding taxes, surcharges, and junk. For between $20 and $40 per day (ie between $80 and $100 per day), I have had the following cars:

A convertible Corvette in Hawaii (en route to Seattle from Montreal, heh):

A convertible Mustang in San Francisco:

Another convertible Corvette in Seattle:

And a Mercedes C300 in Toronto:

Am missing a picture of a Mercedes GLK350 in San Francisco, but the point is there. ASK AT THE COUNTER and be friendly. The Corvette was $400 per day – and I got it for $80 both times! Wish they had grippier front tires on it … kept slipping.
